If you’re after a set of 3 lenses that are affordable to acquire and have a vintage character with lovely flares, sweet bokeh and a low contrast look then keep your eyes out for these: MIR-1 37mm F2.8. which is on the top of the M42 bokeh lens. One of the best affordable and vintage lenses is the Dream Starter lens kit. It guarantees you don’t have a mirror hitting issue, and you might want it for other lenses anyway. Of all the lenses, I like the Zeiss 85mm lenses best for their bokeh, and the Voigtlander SL 125/2.5 Lanthar macro a close second. I’d recommend against buying one that’s been modified to an F-mount and look for a nice example with the screw mount instead – then purchase an M42 to F adapter. Both variants can be found on eBay for less than $75 each depending on condition and seller’s location. They have a distinctive “look” that is difficult to replicate any other way, and are fun to play with. I think that most people who like playing around with Lensbaby lenses and other oddballs like that will really enjoy the Helios lenses. Again - this isn’t the lens to grab if I care about being tack-sharp. Is it sharp? Its fairly sharp, just not at the outer edges of the frame. It mostly lives at wide-open or nearly wide-open anyway. In use, looking at the ring while turning it doesn’t make it any better at knowing where you are in the range on my copy the numbers are backwards so it says you are at f/16 when the lens is wide-open, and f/2 when fully stopped down. This is often desirable by folks who do video. No detents or clicks to tell you what f/stop you are changing to. OP - apologies for the diversion.The M44-2’s other drawback, or “plus” depending on how you look at it, is that the f/stop ring is smooth in movement. But I will have a look at the Jupiter - thanks! As such, unless you intend to shoot a lot of photos using that effect, it's rather limited. Yes, it can produce distinctive swirly bokeh when the scene and subject placement are well-judged, but that's really its one and only trick, IMHO.

It needs stopping down to f/8 for reasonable border performance, but even then the borders lag badly (on full frame, at least). it's big, heavy and unwieldy, lacks contrast, suffers readily from veiling flare, and at the widest couple of apertures is really only sharp in the dead centre. think carefully before you lay down your hard-earned money for one. I don't want to divert far from the OP's main topic, but would say this about the Helios-40-2 1.5/85.
